Homeschooling has emerged as an effective and convenient alternative to traditional schooling. Also known as homeschool, it involves education of children at home under the guidance of parents or tutors. Homeschooling is not a new concept. Before school attendance was made compulsory, a major part of childhood education would often take place at home.

The number of home-educated students in the United States has crossed the two-billion mark. During 2008-2009, around 1.9 to 2.5 million K-12 children were homeschooled. With the annual growth rate falling between 5 and 12%, the homeschool population is increasing rapidly.

Many countries have legalized homeschooling. The concept of home-based education is particularly prominent in counties such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
